Light Chemical Engineering (4 years, Bachelor of Engineering)
Development Overview
Established in 1978, the major was renamed Light Chemical Engineering in 1999 and open to students nationwide. In 2007, it was recognized as a "Quality Major" by Guangxi’s colleges and universities, in 2008 it was designated as a National Characteristic Major, and in 2009 it received Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region Teaching Team Award. In 2019, it was selected as a National First-Class Undergraduate Major and a Guangxi First-Class Undergraduate Major.In 2022, it was accredited by the China Engineering Education Accreditation Association (CEEAA).
The faculty includes one academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, one professor specially appointed under a major national talent program, one recipient of the National High-Level Young Talent Program, two national candidates of the "Hundred, Thousand, and Ten Thousand Talent Project", two experts enjoying special government allowances from the State Council, three Guangxi Bagui Scholars, and two young top talents of Guangxi Bagui Scholars Program. The teaching team is characterized by a balanced age structure, strong research capabilities, high teaching standards, and vibrant vitality, with the academician as the core and young teachers as the backbone.
In the past five years, the major has secured over RMB 70 million in research funding, with more than 500 academic papers published, over 80 patents, and over RMB 8.4 million of revenue from the transformation of scientific research achievements. The team led by Professor Wang Shuangfei has won two national science and technology awards and eight autonomous-region-level and ministerial-level teaching and research awards. Students trained in the major have won over 50 awards in competitions such as the National "Deng Xiaoping Technology Innovation Team", "Challenge Cup", and "Internet+". They have also published more than 100 high-level papers in international academic journals.
Major Objectives
This major emphasizes developing students' engineering literacy, analytical skills, and innovative mindset. It aims to cultivate professionals with capabilities in engineering technology management and scientific research and development for industries and related fields such as papermaking, printing and packaging, automation control, biomass materials and energy, and environmental protection.

Packaging Engineering (4 years, Bachelor of Engineering)
Development Overview
Established in 2008, this major received approval for a "Packaging and Printing Engineering" Program for the master's degree in 2011, was recognized as a Guangxi Characteristic Major in 2018, and was selected as a Guangxi First-Class Undergraduate Major in 2019. It is the only Packaging Engineering Major that is provided by the higher education institution in Guangxi. The faculty team, primarily composed of young teachers with PhD degrees, boasts a reasonable knowledge structure, high teaching abilities, strong research capabilities, and vibrant vitality.
The major has over 50 national, autonomous-region, and urgently-needed local research projects, as well as more than 10 teaching achievements and educational reform projects at the autonomous-region and ministerial levels. In the past five years, it has secured over RMB 30 million in research funding, with over 80 academic papers (including more than 40 SCI-indexed papers) and over 40 patents.

Adhering to the principle of "Centering on Guangxi, Serving the Nation, Reaching ASEAN, and Facing the World", the major focuses on research areas such as biomass (plant fiber) packaging materials, preservation packaging for subtropical fruits, and paper-based packaging design. Students of this major have excelled in national competitions such as the National College Student Packaging Structure Innovation Design Competition, the Competition of China Creative Packaging Design Award, "Challenge Cup", and "Internet+".

Light Chemical Engineering (Sugar Engineering) (4 years, Bachelor of Engineering)
Development Overview
The major has been open to students since 1978. In 1997, it was approved to offer a master's degree in Sugar Engineering, and in 2006, it received approval to offer a doctoral degree in Sugar Engineering. In 2016, it was designated as a Guangxi Characteristic Undergraduate Major. It is the only one higher education institution in the world that offers a complete education system in sugar engineering from undergraduate to doctoral levels. The faculty team boasts excellent political and professional qualities, a comprehensive knowledge structure, rich teaching and practical experience, and strong research capabilities, including one scientist from the modern agriculture sugar industry system and one chief scientist from the Collaborative Innovation Center for the Sugarcane Industry jointly constructed by Guangxi and ministerial departments.
The major has over 80 national, autonomous-region, ministerial and urgently-needed industrial or local research projects, with total research funding exceeding RMB 50 million in the past five years. This includes two projects funded by the National Natural Science Foundation of China, three projects from the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology, one project from the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Affairs, and 12 autonomous-region or ministerial projects. Research achievements include the Second Prize for Scientific and Technological Progress of China National Light Industry Council and the Third Prize for Scientific and Technological Progress of Guangxi. Thirteen research findings have been converted, with a total transfer amount of RMB 1.9366 million. Over 100 academic papers in SCI, EI, and core Chinese journals have been published, and more than 30 invention patents have been granted.

The major aims to cultivate high-quality multidisciplinary leading talents with capabilities in scientific research, engineering design, and management for the light chemical engineering field. Graduates are expected to meet the position requirements in sugar production technology management, quality management, engineering design, and scientific research in the light industry, thereby promoting the development of the sugar industry in Guangxi and across China.

As the only one higher education institution in the world with a complete education system in sugar engineering for cultivating undergraduates, masters, and doctors, our school has consistently supplied high-level technical management personnel to major sugar-producing regions such as Guangxi, Guangdong, Yunnan, Hainan, Inner Mongolia, Heilongjiang, and Fujian, as well as sugar-producing countries such as Australia and those in Southeast Asia, and Africa. It has provided various production technology and management training to over 2,000 personnel. Graduates are highly recognized by employers and society, playing significant roles in the sugar industry in China and in countries involved in the "Belt and Road" Initiative. Over 70% of the mid-to-high-level technical and management personnel in Guangxi's sugar enterprises are graduates of this major. Many outstanding government officials, sugar industry experts, and entrepreneurs have emerged from this major, contributing significantly to technological advancements in China's sugar industry and the economic development of Guangxi.
The major emphasizes the integration of talent cultivation with the industry chain, establishing a long-term mechanism with sugar enterprises through a "campus vocational training camp" featuring industry-university-research integration and an order-based training system. Through targeted internships and precise training, the major cultivates innovative technical talents suited to the needs of local enterprises, effectively promoting positive interaction and mutual development between the university and industry. The internship and training bases are concentrated among the top 10 sugar enterprises in China, providing a solid talent reserve for the transformation and upgrading of the sugarcane industry.

Food Science and Engineering (4 years, Bachelor of Engineering)
Development Overview
Established in 1983, this major was recognized as a “Quality Major” by Guangxi in 2014. The School of Light Industry and Food Engineering is the oldest institution in Guangxi offering a food science major, and serves as the primary training base for high-level professionals in the food industry in Guangxi. It is also currently the only school in Guangxi with a first-level discipline master program of Food Science and Engineering. Several lecturers hold concurrent positions as members of the feasibility expert group for national key laboratories, evaluation experts for key international scientific and technological cooperation projects of the Ministry of Science and Technology, and leaders of the national food production license registration review team.

It leverages the characteristics of Guangxi's subtropical food resources and longevity resources to cultivate high-level engineering and scientific talents with knowledge in chemistry, biology, food engineering, food technology, and food safety inspection.

The major emphasizes the quality control and safety assurance of subtropical agricultural product processing, the development and utilization of Beibu Gulf marine resources, and the green production of staple food resources. It focuses on strengthening students' grasp of fundamental theories and practical abilities in food science and engineering technology.
