The discipline of Light Industry Technology and Engineering of Guangxi University is a first-rate and key discipline with advantageous characteristics in Guangxi, as well as a key discipline of Guangxi University included in the "double world-class project". In 1997, the College of Light Industry and Food Engineering had a second-level discipline master program of sugar engineering. In 2001, it obtained a first-level discipline master program of light industry technology and engineering. In 2006, it got a second-level discipline doctoral program of sugar engineering. In 2008, its light chemical engineering was awarded the title of a national characteristic major. In 2009, it obtained a first-level discipline postdoctoral research station of light industry technology and engineering. In 2018, it possessed a first-level discipline doctoral program of light industry technology and engineering.

To meet the significant strategic needs of the country, the discipline centers around the basic theories and key technologies of the light industry, and is guided by the integration of scientific research and industries, aiming at the forefront of the light industry disciplines. It has formed four disciplinary directions: efficient treatment and resource utilization of typical wastewater in the light industry, clean pulping and wood-based biomass functional materials, functional utilization of Guangxi's characteristic resources, and diversified high-value resource elements of the entire sugarcane industry chain. With the full leverage of the advantages of university-enterprise cooperation, the discipline promotes seamless integration of basic research and technological applications, and achieves rapid application of scientific and technological results. It has obtained internationally advanced technological achievements in key technologies such as pulp cleaning and bleaching, light industry wastewater resource utilization and ultra-low emissions, green sugar production technology, and functional product development, solved core technical problems such as cleaner production in pulp and green sugar production, met significant national strategic needs, and achieved innovative utilization of Guangxi's characteristic resources. It has made great contributions to the high-quality development of the national and local economy and society, as well as the technological upgrading of the light industry.

The talent cultivation goal of this discipline is to cultivate innovative talents with solid knowledge of related majors, excellent academic literacy, and teamwork spirit, who can independently engage in scientific research and technology development, engineering design and implementation, engineering planning and management in this field by comprehensively utilizing the knowledge system of the light industry. In the past five years, the number of first-choice candidates for this discipline has been increasing year by year, with improving quality of student sources. The distribution range of student sources is wide, with a large number of interdisciplinary students. Nearly 40% of high-quality students come from universities included in the "double world-class project".

This discipline has been actively serving the industries, and its related technological achievements not only benefit domestic light industry enterprises, but also realize the export of China's intelligent manufacturing products, enhancing the world influence of China's intelligent manufacturing. In the past five years, Guangxi University has won one Second Prize of the National Technology Invention Award, one Second Prize of the National Science and Technology Progress Award, one First Prize for the Technology Invention Award and the Science and Technology Progress Award of Ministry of Education each, as well as multiple science and technology awards at the autonomous-region and ministerial levels, significantly enhancing the influence of the discipline both domestically and internationally. Graduates in the discipline have become not only the backbone of relevant domestic enterprises, public institutions and scientific research institutes, but also the main force of the design, construction, operation and management of light industry enterprises in the countries along the "Belt and Road". They have played an important role in the construction of the light industry at home and abroad, won high praise from all clients, and enhanced the impact of the discipline in the light industry. In addition, by hosting/co-hosting the International Conference on Biomass Conversion and Renewable Materials, the China Sugar Expo and World Sugar Seminar, the China-Hungary Environmental Protection Forum, the 18th Academic Annual Conference of the CTAPI, and the 2018 Valmet Asia-Pacific Regional Technical Director Training Course, the discipline's reputation at home and abroad was further enhanced.
